Creole Heritage Month in Saint Lucia

Creole Heritage Month, launched 30 years ago, is designed to showcase the island’s rich history and cultural identity.  It is a time where nationals and visitors alike participate in a program of celebrations, cultural demonstrations and musical performances.  In the rural communities, where cultural identity is strongest, one can expect to hear folk songs, storytelling, see cultural dances and experience the traditional way of life in St. Lucia.

On the last Sunday of October, the month long celebrations come to an end with a festive Creole Day held in selected communities on the island.  Grand preparations are made, villages are decorated in Madras cloth, creole music  playing everywhere, drums beaten and  people dancing in the streets.  The highlight of this day is sampling tasty creole dishes such as fishcakes, roasted breadfruit and our national dish – green bananas and saltfish.
